Kernersville,

Fourth
of July Park is already one of the most canine-friendly
places in Kernersville. With dogs allowed in the park
on leash, a doggie water fountain on the paved walking trail,
and two cleanup stations, it attracts many dog lovers to
the area. We want to make it even better. With
suggestions and support from citizens and our own Parks
& Recreation Advisory Board, KPRD is trying to make
a dog park at Fourth of July Park more than a dream.
In April of 2006, the Town of Kernersville's Board of Aldermen
granted permission to raise the estimated $13,500 that it
should cost to build the facility. We have met that
goal through donations, fundraisers, and grants. Surveying
was done during the first of October 2007. Our staff
have started selective tree removal and grading as our workload
allows. In order to allow for flexibility in materials
and possible upgrades to the existing construction, we are
selling bricks for $75 each. They will be placed at
the entryway to create a more beautiful gate to the dog
park. If you are interested in purchasing a brick,
contact Jerri Crews at jcrews@toknc.com
or by phone at
336-996-6421.

THE
DOG PARK RUMMAGE SALE WAS HELD JUNE 30th, 2007
Harmon
Park, 152 S. Main
The
Kernersville Dog Park Committee collected $1,068.21 in proceeds
from this sale. The Town of Kernersville also received
another $65.00 in donations because of the sale. During
the rummage sale, the Bennett Family Children also made
a substantial donation in honor of their parents, Rev. Manly
& Vivian Bennett. The Town passed a resolution
allowing the Bennett children to name the park. Dr.
Jerry Bennett, Susan Bennett, and Brenda Bennett have decided
to name the dog park the Vivian F. Bennett Memorial Dog
Park in honor of their mother and her love of all animals.
Thanks to this rummage sale fundraiser, we were able to
secure a $1000.00 matching grant from Wal-Mart Foundation!
The
Kernersville Dog Park Committee was formed on April 9th,
2007, of citizens and business owners in the area that want
to make this dog park happen. Marcia Pearce of Quilts
"Sew" Quick and Jan Wilson of Carolina K9 Solutions
have taken on the responsibility of heading the committee
and would love feedback or volunteers. You can reach
the dog park committee by email kernersvilledogpark@hotmail.com.
If
you would like to contact them by telephone,
call Marcia at 336-992-5698 or Jan at 336-816-2021.
